Pastor Giles leads toy gun exchange to teach youth about violence prevention

Buffalo community leaders, including Pastor James Giles, organized a toy gun exchange event across from the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue as part of National Youth Violence Prevention Week. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about youth violence and promote safer alternatives for children. By exchanging toy guns for educational materials and positive reinforcement, organizers hope to encourage non-violent play and foster a culture of peace among the city's youth.

As part of National Youth Violence Prevention Week (April 28 – May 2, 2025), community leaders across Buffalo came together to raise awareness and promote peace. A featured event this year included a toy gun exchange held near the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue, organized by Pastor James Giles and other advocates. The initiative encouraged children to trade in toy guns for books and educational materials, reinforcing the message that non-violent play can help build a safer community.

This event is just one of several ways local leaders are working to reduce youth violence and support positive alternatives for Buffalo’s young people.
